Martin told us not to worry and that both Robert and him know the Aku Aku’s native tongue. He said that they would perform umu tahu -- a native ritual to ward off bad luck or misfortune when entering the cave of the serpent. The ritual was performed by the elder tribesmen as we boarded the river boat. We floated down stream for half the day when we arrived at the mouth of a cave at the base of the volcano. We saw the stone formations that Martin had drawn on his map. We were at the right place, the serpent’s den. We unloaded the crate of hashish set it at the opening of the cave and lit it ablaze. Trying not to inhale the thick smoke that entered the snake’s den, we sat and waited patiently for the giant Cobra to appear. Then all of a sudden there was movement. The giant asp slithered out of the mouth of the cave. Robert quickly grabbed the pungi from his bag and started to play for the snake. The snake started to sway and rise up. Robert slowly backed away and drew the snake from out of the cave’s entrance and into the jungle. Once clear, we entered the cave. It was treachous, but we made our way to the back, to where we saw the Black Orchid.
