Before there was Meet The Residents, there was Santa Dog, a double 7-inch and the first official release under The Residents name—well, technically under the name Residents Uninc., but close enough. The set was designed to look like a Christmas card from an insurance company, hence the odd song titles: “Fire,” “Lightning,” “Explosion,” and “Aircraft Damage”. Musically, it’s not dissimilar to Meet The Residents, save for “Aircraft Damage” which is actually just a musical audio excerpt from The Residents unfinished film, Vileness Fats, which is worthy of an article in itself.
“Fire,” however, is the song that The Residents keep returning to. Its bizarre refrain of “Santa Dog’s a Jesus fetus,” has become a Residents trademark, and it’s this song that the band’s recorded over and over again. This original version is a strangely compelling one, and in my opinion, the best. Like many of the early Residents tracks, not a lot of what they would be known for is here, save for the odd sounds and arrangements. Even the singer’s voice is different. Still, no examination of The early Residents is complete without giving it a listen.

Santa Dog's a Jesus Fetus
Has no presents,
Has no presence
In the future...
...In the future
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness severed sleeves
Bing, Bing, Bing, Bong, Bong, Bong, Snowness severed sleeves
A fleeting and a greeting scene of effervescent eves
Bing, Bing, Bing, Bong, Bong, Bong, Effervescent eves
A greeting and a meeting team of hoarse and frosty words
Bing, Bing, Bing, Bong, Bong, Bong, Hoarse and frosty words
A greeting and a cheating team and other noxious herbs
Bing, Bing, Bing, Bong, Bong, Bong, Other noxious herbs
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
A fleeting and a sleeting scene of snowness and of sleeves
Santa Dog's a Jesus Fetus
Santa Dog's a Jesus Fetus
Santa Dog's a Jesus Fetus
Has no presents
Has no presence
In the Future!
